According to the traditional account, Lord Rama came to Gaya with Sita Mata to perform Pind Daan for King Dasharatha. Rama went to arrange the necessary things for the ritual. Sita Mata remained near the Phalgu River. While waiting, she felt that the appropriate time for the ritual was passing. Tradition says that Dasharatha appeared before her and asked her to perform the Pind Daan herself. Sita Mata therefore prepared the pind using the materials available to her and performed the ritual. When Rama returned, however, he asked how the ritual could have been completed without the necessary materials. Sita Mata said that Dasharatha himself had accepted the offering. To establish what had happened, witnesses were called. And this is where the story takes its unusual turn. According to the legend, the Phalgu River, the cow, the Tulsi plant and others did not support Sita's account, while the Akshay Vat stood as her witness. Sita Mata was displeased with those who had denied what they had seen and, in the traditional telling, gave them different forms of consequences or curses. The Akshay Vat, however, remained blessed. Even today, Akshay Vat in Gaya is revered as an important sacred place associated with ancestral rites. Why this story is special The story is not simply about Pind Daan. It carries a deeper idea: Sometimes the most important witness is not a person—it is time itself. Thousands of years may pass. Kingdoms disappear. Roads change. People change. But a sacred tree remains. A river continues to flow. And a place continues to preserve a memory. That is one reason Gaya Ji feels different from an ordinary pilgrimage destination. One of the most well-known traditional stories associated with Gaya is the story of Gayasur. According to Hindu tradition, Gayasur was a powerful being whose intense devotion and spiritual power became so great that even the gods became concerned about its consequences. The story tells that Lord Vishnu eventually placed His foot upon Gayasur. The place where this sacred connection is believed to have occurred came to be associated with Vishnupad in Gaya. Over time, Gaya became deeply connected with ancestral rites and Pind Daan. For devotees, this story is not merely about a distant mythological event. It forms part of the sacred identity of Gaya.
